Bill of lading (BOL)

Also called

Abbreviation

Reading time

A bill of lading records details of goods tendered for carriage and the relevant transport arrangement. Its legal functions and release requirements depend on the document type, terms and governing law.

BILL OF LADING IN PRACTICE

  1. Check the documentMatch parties, shipment identity and terms.
  2. Record the handoffCompare visible quantities and condition.
  3. Resolve exceptionsRetain evidence and follow the agreed process.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Ten pallets. Not ten verified carton counts.

A loading team tenders ten wrapped pallets. The transport document identifies ten pallets, while the brand’s inventory file lists 200 cartons. A carrier acknowledgment of ten pallets is not evidence that the carrier opened every pallet and counted all 200 cartons. The receiving team should preserve the count scope, seal details where applicable and any visible exceptions instead of assuming all records describe the same inspection.

No. Record what could actually be inspected and any stated limitations.

Is an arrival notice the same document?
