LOGISTICS PROVIDERS & OUTSOURCING
3PL
A 3PL is an external provider that performs logistics activities for a customer, such as warehousing, fulfillment, transportation or returns. The contract defines which activities and responsibilities are included.
3PL IN PRACTICE
- Define the workDescribe your orders, stock and service requirements.
- Agree responsibilityAssign execution, systems and escalation ownership.
- Measure deliveryReview agreed service and cost measures.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
1,000 orders can mean different work.
One brand ships 1,000 single-item orders in a month; another ships 1,000 orders with five items each. Both report the same order count, but the second requires 5,000 item picks rather than 1,000, before considering cartons, inserts or returns. A useful 3PL proposal prices each actual profile and explains staffing and capacity assumptions. A universal order-volume threshold cannot establish which provider is suitable.
