X-dock is a shorthand for cross-dock or cross-docking: receiving goods and directing them toward an outbound movement with little or no planned storage. Sorting or consolidation can occur between the handovers.

X-DOCK IN PRACTICE

  1. Plan the matchLink inbound and outbound work.
  2. Control the transferVerify goods and direct the flow.
  3. Reconcile departureConfirm what actually left.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

One inbound load. Several destinations.

An inbound load contains cartons for three destinations. The cross-dock verifies them, sorts them into the agreed outbound loads and records the contents of each. If one outbound vehicle is late, its cartons require a controlled exception rather than disappearing from the flow record.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Agree the requirement before comparing quotes

Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
