RETAIL STOCK VALUATION
Retail Inventory Method
The retail inventory method estimates inventory cost using a relationship between cost and retail selling value under the applicable accounting approach. Its suitability and calculations depend on the business and reporting framework.
RETAIL INVENTORY METHOD IN PRACTICE
- Define the methodUse finance-approved scope and treatment.
- Reconcile the dataCheck cost, retail values and adjustments.
- Verify the inventoryMaintain physical and transaction controls.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
An estimated value does not prove physical stock.
A retailer applies an approved cost-to-retail relationship to an ending retail value. It separately reconciles stock records and physical evidence rather than assuming the resulting amount confirms every unit exists.
