INVENTORY COST & PLANNING
Holding Cost
Holding cost is the cost of carrying inventory over a defined period. Depending on the model, it can include capital tied up in stock, space, insurance, shrinkage, deterioration and obsolescence.
HOLDING COST IN PRACTICE
- Define the scopeChoose the inventory value and period.
- Build the cost modelDocument included cost categories.
- Use it consistentlyCompare inventory policies on the same basis.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
The time basis changes the calculation.
If average inventory value is $100,000 and the assumed annual holding-cost rate is 20%, estimated annual holding cost is $20,000. This illustrative rate is a planning assumption, not an industry benchmark or quoted storage charge.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL pricing and rates guide for the wider invoice context and the guide to comparing 3PL quotes to compare the same scope, activity profile and billing units.
