COST BEHAVIOR & CAPACITY RANGES
Fixed Costs
Fixed costs remain unchanged in total over a stated time period and relevant activity range. In logistics, a facility lease or committed equipment cost may behave this way under its actual terms.
FIXED COSTS IN PRACTICE
- Set the rangeDefine period, activity and capacity.
- Separate cost behaviorDistinguish fixed, variable and step costs.
- Review unit effectsDivide total by comparable output.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
1,000 total. 10 or 5 per order.
A simplified fixed charge of 1,000 currency units contributes 10 per order at 100 orders and 5 at 200. The total remains 1,000 within the stated range. Variable handling and any additional capacity are excluded.
