CUSTOM ENGINEERING & CONFIGURATION
Engineer-to-Order (ETO)
Engineer-to-order is a production approach in which customer requirements drive engineering work for the ordered deliverable. Design, procurement and manufacturing must be coordinated around the approved configuration.
ENGINEER-TO-ORDER IN PRACTICE
- Approve the requirementDefine scope, specification and acceptance.
- Control the configurationLink revisions, components and changes.
- Release and deliverVerify the approved finished configuration.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A revision changes the required component.
An order-specific machine design changes after some parts have been purchased. The team reviews stock, open orders and assembly instructions before releasing the new configuration. Updating a drawing alone does not correct every downstream requirement.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Engineer-to-Order
Must every component be custom?
No. Standard components can be reused.
Is ETO identical to make-to-order?
No. ETO includes order-specific engineering.
Does a drawing update automatically change stock?
No. Controlled downstream actions are needed.
