FREIGHT RATE COMPARISONS
Differential
A freight differential is a stated difference or adjustment between rates, services or reference conditions. In some transport contexts it describes a rate concession reflecting a service or routing disadvantage.
DIFFERENTIAL IN PRACTICE
- Name the baselineIdentify the reference lane, rate or service.
- Quantify the adjustmentState amount, unit and conditions.
- Compare total serviceReview accessorials, timing and eligibility.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A lower rate with a different service.
A hypothetical offer is 20 currency units below a reference shipment rate but uses a longer transit service. The buyer compares the complete price and delivery commitment before choosing. The word differential alone does not show whether that concession offsets the operational tradeoff.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
