TRANSPORT RISK & COMMERCIAL TERMS
Carrier limitations
Carrier limitations are conditions, exclusions or caps that restrict a carrier’s responsibility or the amount recoverable for a shipment problem. Their application depends on the relevant service and governing rules.
CARRIER LIMITATIONS IN PRACTICE
- Read the scopeIdentify covered services and excluded goods.
- Check the limitsEstablish the applicable calculation and conditions.
- Close the gapReview protection and evidence before dispatch.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A product value is not a coverage statement.
A brand tenders a high-value item under a standard service. Its invoice identifies the selling price, but no one has checked the carrier’s applicable limit or commodity exclusions. Before dispatch, the team reviews the service terms and decides whether a different declared-value arrangement, insurance or service is appropriate. The invoice alone does not resolve the exposure.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.

Can a limitation concern delay as well as damage?
Yes. Check which failure types the actual terms address.
Are liability limitations identical to cargo insurance terms?
