Caged inventory is stock held within a physical cage or restricted enclosure. The term describes its storage arrangement, while inventory availability and quality status require separate definitions.

CAGED INVENTORY IN PRACTICE

  1. Identify the locationRecord the enclosure and item quantities.
  2. Check the statusConfirm whether the stock may be allocated.
  3. Control the releaseAuthorize and record the physical movement.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

100 secured. 20 on hold. 80 eligible.

A cage contains 100 units of one SKU. Twenty have a documented quality hold, while 80 remain eligible for orders. Reporting all 100 as unavailable merely because they are caged understates availability; reporting all 100 as saleable ignores the hold. The location and status records must preserve both facts, with controlled movement and release of the held units.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Caged inventory

Is caged stock always quarantined?

No. A physical enclosure and a quality hold serve different purposes.

Can caged inventory be picked for normal orders?

Yes, when stock status and the agreed access procedures permit it.

Does moving stock out of a cage remove a hold?

It should not do so automatically unless an explicitly approved process defines that change.
