PRODUCTION & FINAL CONFIGURATION
Assemble to order (ATO)
Assemble to order holds components or subassemblies in advance and completes the final configuration after an order is received. The available components and assembly process determine what can be promised.
ASSEMBLE TO ORDER IN PRACTICE
- Stock the componentsIdentify approved parts and configurations.
- Allocate the orderCheck all required parts and work capacity.
- Assemble and verifyConfirm output, consumption and quality release.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
100 tops. 80 frames. 80 complete desks.
Each desk requires one tabletop and one frame. With 100 tops and 80 compatible frames, the components support 80 desks before considering capacity, holds or existing commitments. Producing and confirming 30 desks consumes 30 of each component, leaving 70 tops and 50 frames. Assembly stock and finished stock must be reconciled rather than counted as two independent supplies of the same units.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Assemble to order
Is assembling to order the same as making everything from scratch?
No. ATO normally relies on previously stocked components or subassemblies.
Does ATO always beat make-to-order lead time?
No. Actual time depends on component availability, capacity and the required work.
Can a 3PL offer ATO?
Some can. Confirm the specific assembly, tooling, quality and system capabilities needed.
