What Stord’s Acquisition of Penny Black Means for the Future of eCommerce Fulfillment

Stord’s recent acquisition of Penny Black isn't the typical 3PL acquisition announcement. It signals a fundamental shift in what it means to be a modern 3PL: one that understands that fulfillment is just as much about experience as it is about operations. Fulfillment isn’t just about getting boxes out the door. That’s transactional. Useful, but not growth-oriented. Stord appears to be aiming much higher.

As Sean Henry, CEO of Stord, shared in his announcement:
"Today we are thrilled to share that we have acquired Penny Black and their personalized, print-on-demand unboxing technology."

Penny Black in Action: A 3PL Hub Client Story

We’ve seen firsthand what Penny Black can do. One of our past clients at 3PL Hub, Suri, uses the platform to turn their shipments into powerful branded moments. Each box becomes an opportunity to:

  • Deliver data-driven product recommendations and cross-sells
  • Include dynamic discounts and welcome messages tailored to the customer
  • Drive retention and surprise-and-delight marketing directly inside the box

It’s unboxing driven by analytics and it performs.

Stord’s Holistic Vision

I mentioned earlier, most 3PLs still operate transactionally: store, pick, pack, ship, repeat... and that is ok. There are so many good 3PLs that are high-quality service providers but Stord is building something different. The launch of their OMS and now their acquisition of Penny Black aligns with a larger vision to become an all-in-one fulfillment infrastructure that blends technology, logistics, and marketing.

As Sean put it:

"This acquisition furthers our Consumer Experience capabilities and unlocks a new channel for brands to delight and monetize customers... all based on data within sales channels and marketing systems."

Why This Matters for eCommerce Brands

With Penny Black now integrated into Stord’s stack, brands can expect:

  • A new post-purchase revenue channel baked into their fulfillment ops
  • Tools to create highly personalized, scalable experiences at the moment of unboxing
  • Technology that’s already proven to drive +300% ROI and +25% AOV within 3 months

This is especially meaningful for small to mid-sized brands trying to compete with retail giants. As Sean said:

"The acquisition of Penny Black is a direct reflection of Stord’s commitment to level the playing field for all brands and enable brands of all sizes to deliver a leading consumer experience on every order, every time."

What do I think?

I love the NBA. I have since spotting Reggie Lewis (RIP) on my Nan's TV in New Zealand back in about 1992. Bonus, scroll to the end of this post to watch Reggie handle the GOAT.

I'm also a movie buff - I do have a minor in film from the University of Otago & some may know my elbow is likely in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Due to my love of the NBA, I stumbled upon the writing of Bill Simmons (I tried to emulate him once upon a time, I think some articles may still be floating on there using the Wayback Machine...), and if there's one thing Bill Simmons loves is lists and ranking things. And grading movies - I love that, as well.

So how would I grade it?

I give Stord's acquisition of Penny Black a resounding:

a plus grade 3pl hub

At 3PL Hub, we match brands with partners that think beyond the pallet. Stord’s latest move is a clear sign that the future of fulfillment is personalized, experience-led, and strategically integrated. If you're not yet thinking about how your fulfillment partner can elevate your customer experience, now’s the time to start.

And as promised, here's a Reggie Lewis education:
